Bernice M. Rothschild, known as Marge, was a painter who spent summers for many years at her camp, The Pines, one of the cottages at Saranac Inn.

When her father, Aaron Newmark, was diagnosed with tuberculosis in the 1930s the family moved to Saranac Lake so that he could be treated at the Trudeau Sanatorium.  Marge and her sister, Helen Newmark Sandhaus often accompanied their mother Ruth Newmark, on visits to the san. Later, Helen was diagnosed with TB and was admitted to Trudeau, and ultimately survived the disease.

In 1963, the family purchased "The Pines," once a guest cabin at Saranac Inn, where they spent summers. Marge inherited the cabin in 1980 making Upper Saranac Lake her summer residence. After her husband's death, she lived there year 'round.

She was very interested in preserving the history of Saranac Lake during the days of the san, and wanted to see Saranac Lake regain its prominence as a healing community.  She was a housewife who became an artist at a time when women artists struggled to gain recognition. She served as president of Artists in America, providing a platform to foster social change. Her abstract work was exhibited in many galleries, one-woman shows in New York City and museums such as. the [Museum], and the Silvermine Art Guild. She enjoyed abstract art, and believed in using abstract thought to stimulate creativity.
