Martin H. Hellerich

From Historic Saranac Lake Wiki

The Malone Farmer, January 19, 1910

Martin H. Hellerich, 69 years of age, shot himself in the forehead with suicidal intent in his cigar factory at Saranac Lake Saturday afternoon. He was found still alive but frozen to the floor in a pool of blood Sunday morning. Physicians revived him and he gave family troubles as the cause of his act. He came to Saranac Lake ten years ago and has a wife and three married children in Syracuse. He was reticent about his past, and was known as "Old Pop" to his customers. The bullet did not penetrate the brain but pressed a part of the skull against the cerebral artery and a hemorrhage of the brain was feared if it should be removed. The revolver had been held so close that his forehead was burned and blackened by the powder.
