Tragedy on Broadway

Man crushed by truck during fight with son

SARANAC LAKE - A Saranac Lake man was killed last night after he and his son were struck by a tractor trailer while fighting on a downtown street.

Walter F. Nagengast, Jr., 42, of St. was pronounced dead at the Lake. His son, Michael K. Nagengast, 23, also of 6 James St., suffered numerous sprains, abrasions and contusions in the accident, but refused admittance to the hospital.

According to village police, the two began fighting in Dr. Y's bar shortly before 10:30 p.m. After the fight was stopped by bar employees the two left the bar and resumed the brawl in the street on Broadway. They were struck by a north bound truck operated by Thomas R. Lincoln, 35, of Ray Brook.

Police say the truck was not exceeding the speed limit at the time of the accident. No charges have been placed against Lincoln.

Michael Nagengast was charged by police with disorderly conduct. He was released on his own recognizance pending an appearence in village court on Dec. 13.

Police say the investigation into the accident is continuing and further criminal charges are pending.

The Walter Nagengast Sr. was the former owner of The Birches, a Ray Brook tavern.
