Arthur Kinsolving Is Dead at 77; Rector of St. James' for 22 Years
The Rev. Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, a retired rector of St. James' Episcopal Church in Manhattan and a member of a family that has given three bishops and many priests to the Episcopal Church, died of cancer yesterday in Greater Baltimore Medical Center. He was 77 years old and lived in Baltimore.
In a distinguished career as a clergy-man that began in 1924, Dr. Kinsolving served as director of religious activities at Amherst College and as rector of Grace Church in Amherst, Mass.; as rector of Trinity Church in Boston and as rector of Trinity Church in Princeton, N.J. He joined St. James' Church in 1947.
Dr. Kinsolving was president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York from 1162 to 1965.
He served as rector of St. James' for 22 years, succeeding the Rev. Horace W. B. Donegan, the Bishop of New York. The prestigious church, on Madison Avenue at 71st Street, was founded in 1810 and included in its congregation members of some of New York's best-known families.
Born in Huntington.
Dr. Kinsolving's grandfather, the Rev. Lucian Lee Kinsolving, was the Bishop of southern Brazil. A cousin, the Rev. Arthur Barksdale Kinsolving 2d, was Bishop of Arizona.
Dr. Kinsolving was born Aug. 23, 1899, in Huntington, L. I. He was educated at the University of Virginia and at the Virginia Episcopal Theological Seminary, of which he was a long-time trustee. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Christ Church of Oxford University and was ordained a deacon in 1923 by an uncle, Bishop George H. Kinsolving. He became a priest in 1924.
In 1953, Dr. Kinsolving was a member of a 10-man team of clergymen that went to Britain under an exchange program set up by the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.
On his retirement from St. James' in 1969, Dr. Kinsolving expressed the hops that his successor would marshal the potential of the church's congregation to help alleviate "the disillusionment and alienation and misery that a large number of our Negro citizens in New York face that makes life almost unbearable in the slums."
After his retirement from St. James', Dr. Kinsolving taught at St. Timothy's School and at St. Paul's School for Boys, both in Baltimore. From 1971 to 1973, he was minister of the Chapel by the Sea on Captiva Island, Fla.
Dr. Kinsolving is survived by his wife, the former Mary Blagden; two sons, Augustus and Thomas, and a daughter, Anne Talbot.
A funeral service will be held at St. Paul Church in Baltimore, where his father, the Rev, Dr. Arthur Barksdale Kinsolving, was rector for 35 years. The date of the service has not been set.
